| January 2002 â Senior Developer / Project Manager - Claritum
Claritum produces software to streamline the print buying process, running on a web-based platform. During the last 2¾ years, I have been instrumental in developing the product from a small task tracking system to a full-blown print management package that can handle multiple job types, multi-part job tracking and customer-facing order and job tracking, with an wide range of specifications. I was responsible for designing and writing the majority of the visible system (I inherited a set of core functionality), not least the pricing matrix systems (DHTML based for speed of use) and the job bag management software (PHP based, with a complex calculation routine written partly in PHP and partly in DHTML). I rewrote the HTML throughout the system to enhance use of style sheets and to make rapid application development easier. We subsequently moved on to template-based output for further simplification.
The majority of my code development takes place using PHP, SQL (MySQL), HTML and complex Javascript / DHTML functionality.
More recently, I have been involved in the recruitment process due to Claritumâs expansion. I short-listed candidates and interviewed them with the IT director, and I was part of the final decisions as to who Claritum would employ and a suitable salary.
As Senior developer, I am responsible for ensuring that all developers code to Claritum's coding standards, producing code of the right calibre in the allotted time frame. I resolve style and functional debates, and ensure that work is produced to Claritumâs high standards at the correct time.
As Claritum's system has evolved over time I have learned a good deal about what is involved in producing a good system. I understand the need to produce maintainable, readable and reusable code at all times.
I have also been involved with project management throughout this project, visiting client sites to introduce new features, resolving client issues and maintaining good customer relations â recently turning a customer from one who was considering changing software provider to one that was happy that Claritum could perform the upgrades that were required. Other non-code tasks I have performed include training days. This involves visiting the client site to deliver training in how to use the system correctly, teach and answer questions that the client may have.
April 2001â December 2001 - Software Developer â Force Internet
Developed an online E-commerce solution written in ASP from the ground up to enable small retail businesses to gain a small online presence on a budget. This involved a design life cycle, and full liaison with the graphical design team. I learned the basics of XML for data transfer purposes. Among the other projects I worked on were an affiliate creation and administration system for ajabo.com, enabling users to create affiliate accounts, maintain them, and access statistics.
June 2000 â April 2001 - Web Developer - Domino
Developing new ideas to bring customer websites and internet products to life. The main development language used at Domino is ASP, but I also gained some experience in COM and PHP. I achieved the role of Deputy Project Manager in recognition of my ability to communicate with customers, and staff, and delegate tasks efficiently, and used this opportunity to improve my communication skills yet further. Domino appreciated my ability to deal with clients and staff in a controlled and calm manner. My multi-tasking skills were stretched when I was asked to cover for more than one team leader in their absence, especially when two of their holiday periods overlapped, yet I successfully overcame this challenge.
Sep 1996 â June 2000 Student
Aberystwyth, University of Wales. Learnt Ada, HTML, Java, C, Visual Basic, Unix, UML. Major project : online retail store, written in ASP, designed using UML. Project management in 2nd year leading 6 people to produce an intelligent stock dealer system.
|
