The industry is still expanding very fast. Hence, there a big demand and a shortage of "good" people. Hence anybody with half an ounce of wit can step in and start trading.
****
Which reminds me. Rates - how much?
Since I started, I have worked fewer hours (days) than as a staff member of a large corporation (5 week holiday etc), and have offset a fair amount against tax; hardware, software and travel for example.
I could have hence charged less. But the downside is periods of slack, no sick pay and an accountant (who charges me once a year for basic accounting).
I think the person who charged 10 quid an hour (400 a week - 20,000 for a 50 week year, say) should think about 30 to 35 an hour. And spent any spare time improving skills.
Gordo.
