Many workers in corporate situations are unaware that there are any
other software vendors than Microsoft, and use computers only as a
'necessary evil' adjunct to their job, often working with software
intentionally crippled by an IT person because "nobody needs those
features here".
My other half worked for years for an up-to-date firm in an office where
she was the only person who knew that you could use another typeface in
Word other than the default. The idea that you could design a report
using, say, Times for the body copy and Helvetica for the sub-heads was
completely unheard of. Making it look nice just as a matter of course
was not on the agenda.
And we have to deal with this sort of attitude when we make Web sites
for these people, who think that the software IS the website. Bah.
best wishes,
Paul
