Unless you have a reason to you should keep it as one.

The most valid reason is to allow areas that repeat to be reused or for
navigation purposes as this seems to be a splash screen (still havn't
brought that jakob nielson book then ;-) it is better on it's own.

Every image you create is opened as a new connection to the host. By
chopping graphincs up you are creating more connections than needed and
slowing the site down.
