Anything between £45 and £80 is about right dependent upon the skill set you
are using (and where you want to work) to develop dynamic database driven
web sites. I would also suggest you are not pricing yourself out of the
market and that in general you are cheaper, than say somebody from Accenture
(Arthur Anderson Consulting) or PWC who usually price themselves at around
800+ a day.
Skill sets I use are ColdFusion, HTML, Javascript, Database (Oracle, SQL
Server, MySQL and Access). All work is found through jobserve.com.
If you can get into Java (jsp) you can get rates in excess of £100 an hour,
but you have to have a serious grounding in Software Design/Engineering.
It also depends on your focus. I'm currently focusing on Intranet rather
than Internet development. The market in the Internet world is more
volatile, where as Intranet development is usually undertaken by larger
corporations (i.e. with more cash), and the work is more varied as you are
developing online systems to support the business processes of the company.
At the end of the day, if they change a requirement, you just do the work,
and they accept the charge. No questions asked. Intranets also have the
added bonus of being forever evolving.
