That all depends on the email client. The one I'm using here on my mac
(Powermail 3) picks up URL's from the protocol (http://, ftp://, gopher:/
/, etc) and not whether it has www on the front or not. On the other
hand, the client on my Linux box (KMail) looks for the www (and I think
that's configurable).
As to whether to use www or not, I've had certain cases arise in user
testing where without the www users haven't realised that it is a URL,
and other times they've assumed a mistake on my part and put the www in
themselves.
The safest bet is, no matter which way you do it, make sure the other way
works as well.
If I get a minute today, I'll go through some log stats for my sites and
see what live users are actually doing. May give you some more food for
thought.
