Not sure if I follow your question. The IP part is dealt with by the DNS
system, getting a site to work with www ( or shop.domain.com,
foobar.domain.com etc) or not is generally a matter of web server
configuration.
When you type in (for example) http://www.polytechnic.co.uk/ your browser
queries a DNS server to find the IP for the domain polytechnic.co.uk.
Once that has been resolved it then asks polytechnic.co.uk "where can I
find the machine 'www'?"
If you type in http://polytechnic.co.uk then again it resolves the
domain, and asks polytechnic.co.uk "whats the default machine serving
http on this domain?"
They are seperate systems. DNS gets you to the right domain, from there
that domains own system takes over.
Thats a really simplified (and probably a bit wrong) version, if there
are any better qualified DNS techs, please feel free to jump in here.
