MySQL by Paul DuBois from New Riders is excellent. There are 2 database
examples running throughout the book, starting with basic stuff running through
to complex examples. There are also some very useful reference sections at the
end, great for checking things like date/time formats etc. It's written in a
friendly informal style (but not patronising) by one author.
I also have Professional PHP Programming from Wrox by five authors - it's OK
but the number of authors makes the book "bitty" and incoherent. There are
also a number of errors in the many code example segments, which makes me think
the book was cobbled together in a hurry. There's also quite a bit of content
you wouldn't necessarily expect in a PHP book - like 62 pages of HTML tags and
their compatibility with popular browsers... But there isn't an alphabetical
listing of PHP functions...
