So it is likely that it is my software modem that is causing it? But one day
I was connecting at 46k, and a day later 31k.... :-O

Soft Modems, pah! Had a similar problem here, old computer with hardware
modem 48-52K on a regular basis, new one with 5 times the 'resources' (but a
softmodem) getting less than 28K. We now share the connection on the older
machine, using Winroute and 5 quids worth of network cable, if that's any
help.........
