But then why is what we're talking about any different to what we and
hundreds of other companies do now? Loads of companies use the business
model of building their company by hiring contractors and freelancers or
subcontracting to other companies, while steadily increasing their in-house
head-count. It's not anything new and it doesn't serve the freelancer.
What a freelancer or small consultancy needs most of all is focused
marketing effort to bring them in more work. The aims of any organisation
set up to provide this should be to finance this marketing effort and bring
in more work by presenting the various freelancers/companies as a collective
organisation. It's kind of like an arts and crafts centre, where you get a
number of individual artists in small shops selling their wares. The public
see the group of shops for buying arty stuff, the traders all contribute to
posters, adverts in the paper, etc but they are still really independent
artists.

Isn't that what we need?

Cheers,

Pete

Another thing that has come to mind is imagine the following scenario:-

"The organisation exists and through the efforts of the organisation some
work is secured, the work is completed by a member of the organisation and
then the person leaves the organisation. Later on the client returns and
wants some updates/changes done, but due to the rights issue the
organisation cannot undertake the work."

If the organisation has a policy of retaining the rights and as a part of
this maintains a database of the source etc, then the updates/changes can be
undertaken by whoever. Also it could be argued that the individual who did
the original work received the work through the efforts of the organisation
and as such any subsequent work would be treated collectively rather than
individually. I know some people reading this far could also say "but its
due to the quality of my work that further work was obtained", yes, but if
the organisation maintains high standards of work in all areas this would
not be an issue.

Anyone ??

I don't think we need to be too rigid on this. We can define copyright
ownership with each piece of work. For example, we might use an associate
who has some components or script that are ideal for a project - they won't
be too happy about taking on the project if they lose ownership of their
code!

Cheers,

Pete
