RE: FN-FORUM Dont go to uni
date posted 12th July 2001 01:59
Well, this is a can of worms..... Maybe some of the programmers in this
forum will concur, but from my experience learning to program is different
to web design. The skills and techniques that university courses in
"Computer Programming" are a very good foundation for any modern day
language. For example, if I recall correctly, PASCAL is a language designed
in the late 1960's/early 1970's, the language is used to teach structure for
data and programming, many of these techniques would not be apparent in many
modern languages.
Other good examples are learning to program in assembly language/machine
code. With a firm understanding and skill in this area you develop a very
good approach to problem solving and routine writing.
I don't think that any reasonable university course is a waste, many
employers don't really care what someones degree is in, they just want to
know if the person is capable of commiting to something for a period of time
and following it through.
This next bit may offend some developers, but it is not intended to so
please read it first before spitting feathers:-
In my opinion there is a great difference between real development (actual
languages such as C/Java etc) and the so called developers who have a core
package and write custom scripts to manipulate the core package. Certain
areas of the internet development would appear to be based in 'real'
development where as others appear to be beefed up word processors.

Subject: FN-FORUM Dont go to uni
Hi, it's me again ,and no i don't have anything to sell!
Iis it just me or do many people here share the same thought that going to
uni to study computing is a little useless. Unless its programming or
electronics stuff which don't change as much, studing things like webdesign
and networking at uni seems to be a waste of time. I mean by the time you
get out the technology is old, and while you are in there you are taught by
one source , the book, rather than learn by your self throught the net,
learning hundreds of techniques and stealing code.
There are some great new media schools in sweden(where i'm from ) namely
hyperisland.com (or .se, can't remember and too lazy too check) that are
really good at teaching web design, BUT after going through a class's final
projects i noticed quite obviuolsy that they were all tought the same thing
by the same person and had the same design flaws.
Learning to design a website and learning dreamweaver are 2 totaly
differnet things, so one should really research the course before going.
just my thoughts on the issue
