RE: FN-FORUM Dont go to uni

I agree with Johnny on this one - a lot of the technology and skill sets are
evolving so rapidly that it does make some of these courses redundant before
they're finished. However, I guess a certain amount of basic skills
involved aren't going to change but there's every possibility you knew those
before the course started! However, most employers either want 3 million
years experience in a similar field or a graduate or whatever so it is a
problem!
I remember planning to go on a Dreamweaver course - I thought I had the
basics down fairly well and thought it may be worth investing the money in
either an intermediate or advanced course - until I saw the prices and
syllabi (correct plural? - sounds like a dessert!!) .... I digress ...
anyway, most of the stuff on the advance course I'd already worked out for
myself - all the things I really wanted to learn about (those ones that
really are difficult to fathom from the on line help etc) weren't covered -
so they didn't get my money and I fathomed them out in the end for nothing
:-)

Subject: FN-FORUM Dont go to uni
Hi, it's me again ,and no i don't have anything to sell!
Iis it just me or do many people here share the same thought that going to
uni to study computing is a little useless. Unless its programming or
electronics stuff which don't change as much, studing things like webdesign
and networking at uni seems to be a waste of time. I mean by the time you
get out the technology is old, and while you are in there you are taught by
one source , the book, rather than learn by your self throught the net,
learning hundreds of techniques and stealing code.
There are some great new media schools in sweden(where i'm from ) namely
hyperisland.com (or .se, can't remember and too lazy too check) that are
really good at teaching web design, BUT after going through a class's final
projects i noticed quite obviuolsy that they were all tought the same thing
by the same person and had the same design flaws.
Learning to design a website and learning dreamweaver are 2 totaly
differnet things, so one should really research the course before going.
just my thoughts on the issue
