RE: FN-FORUM Dont go to uni
date posted 12th July 2001 10:37
Can I put my 2 pence worth in on the pro-uni lot.
I did an MSc Comp Sci part time while already working in
IT (I had originally done Biology).
The "relavance" of the course to my job was probably
around 25% but it gave me a much better
understanding which over the years (the course wa 1991-
93) I have found invaluable.
To give an example I was building Database systems
which included a lot of SQL while at work at the time. As
part of the course we got 5 SQL queries to work out - it
took me all week to do the last two, I still think I
learned more about SQL in those 5 questions than I
have done in 10 years of building database systems.
Technology changes very quickly - I can't think of the
number of technologies that have been hailed as the
next big thing just to disappear never to be seen again -
but if you understand the fundamentals then you will
be able to pick up the relavant ones.
Plus you'll have such a good time, I graduated in 1988
but still think fondly of those busy days (3- 1 hour
lectures), the late nights (in night clubs)..... I'll stop
before this becomes a nostalgia series on Staurday
night TV!
