Exactly the same here (even down to when I ditched my Diploma). It still, of
course, took a few years to gain that experience, there is no quick way round
it.

Whether the course is up to date or not, they will always give you a great
understanding of the underlying principles of your chosen discipline. Whether
it's providing you with half decent program structure and commenting, or an
understanding of colour types and usage.
