Re: FN-FORUM OT Server Connectivity

Ouch
Their are a number of problems with ADSL and hosting:
Upstream is always .256mbit, no matter whether you have the .5, 1 or 2mbit
connection. And for a webserver upstream is the important bit.
ADSL is contended so you're not going to get all that bandwidth all of the
time. And as more ppl start to get ADSL the more your share of the
available bandwidth is going to drop. I saw these flunctuations in effect
on Sunday when I watched everyone's ping outside our office network spike to
600+ whilst hosting a game of CS on an ADSL connection.
ADSL can't be made to burst. If you get /.'d then you can't phone up your
ISP and ask em to burst your connection for you.
If you're happy co-locating then redbus interhouse are doing a special deal
atm, 11Us of rackspace, with 64k of bandwidth burstable to 10Mbps for
£275pm. Similarly Clara.net do a similar deal, 4Us rackspace with 10Mb
connection for £3k pa. I did find someone that did rackspace with 10Mb
connections in Telehouse for an abusrdly small amount of money (I think it's
the ppl that the mad hatters use), but for the life of me I can't find them.
Clara.net are well worth talking to about connectivity. They do a lot of
work through resellers (yes, we are resellers for them) and give you a 10%
discount on any sales you make, including to yourself.
