I always try to ask for a deposit up front, especially with new clients
(sometimes up to 50% and depending on their 'dodgyness', non-returnable). If
they can't afford it then they probably cant afford the finished article.
It's much the same as offering RFP's on quotes, rather than designing a number
of example sites. They are hireing your expertise as a designer, not your
abilty to do free proofs.
