Sorry I'm getting confused. I forgot you were trying to get 256 colours ie
less colours. I dare say it must be possible to get less than 16 bit
Hicolor, otherwise you wouldn't be able to go into Windows Safe mode so as
others have said it's probably just a case of changing the driver.

Saying that it's a good idea to back-up the system files, registry etc if
messing with monitor drivers (who put the lights out) I always use the old
Windows 95 Emergence Recovery Utility (I don't trust these new fangled
methods of rolling back ones mistakes) and the times I've had to use it are
too innumerable to mention, but then the ERU does allow one to be reckless,
and can get one out of a hole ;-)

I only have 16 bit as an option??? and can select 1024x768
