All I can remember is I wrote some code to do that about 1987, the info came
from the banks.

The Luhn check is relatively simple. I have C code for that if anyone
wants it and the algorithm is published all over the web.
I've also got some code that will identify VISA/Mastercard etc. from the
card number and have a breakdown of debit card numbers by type and issuer
that I found somewhere on the net.
