Paul,
I have used them both and they are pretty much the same. That said freehand
does seem to have much better type control however the interfaces take a bit
of time to get used to. Freehand can also do mock 3D work with perspective
grids. AI has an edge with transparency in version 9 but I have heard talk
of this going tits up when/if work gets sent for repro.
If you want to have a detailed look then computerarts were giving away a
free copy of version 8 recently so you may be able to get your self a copy!
