Happy new year to you too Andrew.
I would suggest using Flash for this (Director users would suggest =
Director ;-) You can then convert the swf (Flash file to an exe for pc's =
or hqx for macs) you have the choice of accessing the data as XML or =
standard text files - which in essence is a flat file DB at it's most =
basic.
