It surprises me at times how many people keep slating Windows Webservers as
being unstable and unrealiable - when 9 times out of 10, the problem lies
with the fact that most NT Administrators don't know what they're doing!

Because Windows and IIS can be setup by clicking a few buttons - people
assume that is all thats needed and it's left - raw and unpatched with
security holes.... however, by spending a little time and shutting down the
correct services, you can have a secure and stable OS with just as much
capability as a *nix box.

People assume it is easy doing NT administration because of Windows GUI
interface and wizards - but unfortunately there aren't that many truely
serious NT Admins who actually know the ins and outs of Windows NT/2k

I have 2 Windows 2000 boxes with IIS and SQL Server.. set up and running
fine - they didn't get affected by NIMDA or NIMDA2 and we didn't hear
anything of CODE Red - even though 8 other machines on the same network, run
by another company all had the virus and caused no end of problems for them.
I've also only had to reboot them 4 times in the last 8 months (when I
updated software)

They currently run 11 sites, with each site clocking up between 3500 and
45,000 visitors a month - most of the sites are database driven from the SQL
machine and all use Custom COM components - so it isn't as if they are
underused.

I'm not on any ego trip here, I'm just making a point, that just because
there are security issues with IIS/Windows - it's generally down to the
inadequacies and laziness of the administrators that permit these problems
to exist - afterall, if you leave your home front door open, you will
eventually get burgled.
