Can't you use Excel currency styles? Just modify the currency styles to use
a $ instead of a £. You could point out to the client that this will be very
misleading if the number is actually in GBP....

You can create an custom format which has the "$" in the format for example
"$#.##".

Doesn't fit on my screen horizontally (or vertically) and can't be resized
or maximized and doesn't have scroll bars. I really hate that, especially
