Re: FN-FORUM Windows 2000 or Windows XP
date posted 16th January 2002 14:16
From all the reviews I've read XP seems to offer a bit more than W2K but
not enough to make it worth upgrading. But if you've got it preinstalled I
don't see the benefit of going back to W2K - especially as Microsoft is
only producing XP version of some core software now. After all W2K is NT5
and XP is NT6, and you wouldn't uninstall w98SE to replace it with w98,
would you?
One omission from XP relevant to web developers is the lack of Java in the
standard XP bundle - you'll need to download a JVM.
Big warning though: I believe XP offers a new version of NTFS, which means
if you format the hard disk with XP's version, you won't be able to
dual-boot or install W2K - you'll need to reformat it. You could stick with
the W2K format, but presumably if the machine has XP preinstalled it'll use
the latest version of NTFS.
There may be a workaround. There was an article about it in one of the
usual PC magazines just before XP came out. I can't remember now but it may
be worth checking on ZDnet.
Anyone got more info on this?
