Mike,
Simon's site is listed in Google, though with PR1 so it is unlikely to
appear very highly in the results - I just had to laugh when I went and
visited it though (Sorry Simon - no offence meant)
I do think the look and feel of the site is good.

Getting listed in google is not hard as it has one of the most aggressive
crawlers out there, along with All The Web.
Find a site listed in google and get your site added to that sites link
page..... job done. (mail me off list if you want me to add your site to one
of mine)
Now getting a decent ranking is whole different ball game
