I used to be an editor for Looksmart in Australia in 1999 and there
definitely was a character limit on the descriptions. But I'm afraid I can't
be much help as when I was working on it, it was editor-searched listings
only, no external submissions.

The only things we had to really look for was that the website was of a
decent quality, and that it would fit into one of the categories (not
difficult).

Ahhh the days of trying to think of different descriptions for the hundreds
of virtually identical regional fire and police station websites in Canada,
and having competitions in the office as to who could discover the most
revolving skulls on a site when we were researching the music section...(I
won btw when I came across a site with the entire background made up of
repeated revolving skull icons)
