Thanks for the advice Ian,

As it turns out - I spoke to a colleague who suggested just unloading the
Application Protection (which is normally set at Medium)

I did this and it worked - it hasn't happened again, so don't know whether
it's a definitive answer but it saves restarting IIS and losing other active
w/sites.
