If in Windoze 2000 or above, you can right click on the file and then
properties-->summary and scroll down or expand the "video" part and it
should tell you under codec. (you have to click on the advanced button
at the bottom also)

or, dunno if it will work, but you could open it in wordpad and have a
look at the header.

What are you trying to open it under?
