RE: FN-FORUM My PC is driving me crazy!
date posted 1st August 2002 16:44
Now have upgraded the ram in my PC.
Ran DOS RAM-burn-in test. When I came back in still no problems had been
detected.
Anyway still put extra ram in
Still crashing!
PC does not feel much faster yet, now have 400MB instead of 256.
Look's like it's the motherboard. Is there any reasonable way to test this,
or is it just a process of elimination.
TIA

I was thinking maybe ( naively? ) That off-loading power feed of the two
hard-drives to another machine would significantly reduce the power
requirements. Or does the CPU take the lion's share of the power ?

that would depend on the power requirements of the motherboard in the case
and the power output of the PSU.

Hi
I've connected my old power supply still in an old PC case!.
I have just connected the power wires to the two hard-drives. Everything
else is still running from the existing power supply.
Anyway it still crashes, does this pretty much eliminate the power supply
being at fault ?

hmmm, difficult to say. companies always say 'recommended' and that normally
means they are getting a back-hander.
Not really sure where you can go from here except trying out different parts
with trial and error.
I'd start with RAM and then power supply.

Yep it's an 300W 4/8A ATX Switching power supply.
Does this mean it's not the powers supply, or should I have only brought a
recommended power supply
?

Now the HHDs ( again depending on speed - 7200 RPM being fastest, unless you
are talking SCSI ) would consume a bit, along with the DVD/CD as it is
rewiteable, therefore requiring different power for different lazers.
I would say that 300+ watt power supply should be OK for an athlon 1ghz -
this is the most common power supply.

I'm not sure what else to suggest as i am not there - but hopefully this
will have got you underway.
Did oyu build / modify the PC yourself, or is this a standard system ?

I would definately say Hardware problem - if various oses crash, then that
can be the only fault.
How many hard disks do you have ? What graphics card do you have ?
What are you running from USB ports ?

Thanks for the advice wil check the cards are in properly.
Have already updated BIOS.
I think it's an OS independent problem nearly. The only thing it does not
seem to crash in is dos-which is not exactly demanding.
What power-supply (kind-of) would you recommend.
I have an AMD 1Ghz, 2 Network cards and sound card.
Cheers
Mike
