The question does remain, though - why are they configurable at all?

I think the majority of us here who choose obscure bg and font
colours/faces do so in order that we don't forget to specify them in our
coding - not because we think they look good... as my yucky green on
pukey yellow and Kathy's cyber pink and lime clearly demonstrate!!
