Personally I have a soundblaster audigy...which is nice with 5.1 surround
sound...:-)

Depends on your use - but if it's serious music production then forget the
SBs.

As long as you can put up with the hum and hiss and bass distortion ... You
can't tell if you use the crappy mini-speakers they always try and get you
to use, but put it thru a decent amp and the quality is noticably lacking...
... and the software/driver isn't the most reliable either!
