Re: FN-FORUM UPS Recommendations

date posted 30th December 2002 12:18

Hi Darren,

Can't make many reccomendations as I run my two servers from a home brew UPS
that I've had for a number of years.

However, first stage is to work out the power consumption - most modern
machiens consume a lot more than they used to. Don't put the monitors on
the UPS circuit, they use a fair amount of power unless you have power
saving put on.

Not including monitors or peripherals that aren't powered from the PC :
If you've got a machine with a power supply rated at, say, 300 Watts, then a
rough calculation is :

Power = I * V
Current Consumption from mains = 300 / 240
Therefore, current consumption is about 1.25 A. Let's go up a bit, and call
it 1.5 amps.

If you have 5 machiens with 300 W power supplies, you need to find 5 * 1.5
Amps for 10 minutes, therefore 7.5Amps for 10 minutes.

You also don't want any brown out towards the end of that period, so I'd
probably luck at something capable of sourcing 240V at 10A from the battery
for 10 minutes.

I reckon a couple of hundred squids should get you in the ball park.

Subject: FN-FORUM UPS Recommendations

Hi there

I had a power cut here yesterday and whilst I've not lost anything I've
decided that I can't risk all of my machines just getting switched off like
that again.

So, I'm after personal recommendations for a single UPS's that can handle at
least 4 machines and automatically shut them down when the power cuts. I
have 2 Linux, 1 Slowaris and 1 Windows machine to cover. I've had dealings
with big rack mounted APS units before that could power a rack for 10 mins,
they had a serial connection to each machines and I seem to remember some
daemon running that looked for a signal coming in from the UPS. Am I talking
big bucks here for my much more simple needs?

Obviously I'll start looking for myself, but as I said, I'm after any
personal recommendations as dabs has 5 pages of them!

Tia
