But it would be very difficult to gain some of the addresses that are
being spammed the address is rather obscure.
It is not reasonable to assume that they are being detected by a brute
force method, especially since the spam on some started very soon after
the accounts were created. The security on AOL is well known to be poor
with backdoor software available (or at least used to be).

You do not need to make an AOL address known! If I was a spammer I could
just send emails to millions of AOL address by guessing them. This is
the same with any ISP.
