I'm using IPCop with a USB BT FROG (ADSL), and that's working fine. IPCOP

I don't know about the USB part, but I use NAT on Linux with two network
cards to do this job. This link is useful for setting up NAT on Linux

So long as port 25 is open on BT's network he could run an SMTP server
(appropriately configured) of his own. A quick search on Yahoo should
turn up appropriate candidates.

mail.btclick.com, I haven't tried this myself as I'm not on BT but one

It seems that BT block any mail being sent via their SMTP servers if it
is not using an e-mail address at a domain hosted by them!

One simple answer is for that user to use BT's SMTP server to send
outgoing mail and leave the settings for POP/IMAP set in the normal way.
