Microsoft attempt to do the same.
Most of the time Ms have been aware of the problems, have issued patches and
people are too idle to implement them. Buffer over-runs and such in Unix
were the classic ways in to sites for years. Script kiddies can exploit
holes in Microsofts O/S but again, apply the patches and in 90% of cases you
stop the hacks.
You should point the finger at the coders where appropriate, I agree, but
there does seem to be a lot of pointing at Microsoft and nothing at other
companies / universitoies / Open Source people who also let some real
stinkers through.
People need to take a little responsibility for the sites they claim to
administer. And the coders need to take responsibility. And when we dish
blame, if we have to point fingers be fair about it!

perhaps because they try to at least inbuild a certain level of security in
them?
its only recently with the advent of 'trustworthy computing' and the various
gripes techies have always had with M$ tech entering the public domain
they've started to get their act together.
plus theres a certain level of honesty in the OSS world that M$ simply
hasn't got the gist of yet - they've fought tooth and nail to let any hole
they find remain secret until they've found a fix, so basically if a script
kiddie finds the vuln before M$ bother to inform you about it you may just
be in the shit. forewarned is forearmed as the saying goes.
so yeah, point the finger at those doing the hacking but don't let the
coders get away with it either.
