I tried setting the preferences in distiller so I could print from illustrator. The results I got were the same: jagged edged lines. No smooth lines at all. Ya best bet is opeing the file in photoshop...

Which ones? Wallpaper is in %systemroot% (usually winnt). Just do a search for *.bmp. Most icons are in dlls, so you need to use a resource editor or similar to get them out. MS used to make the stand...
