I've been doing it for ages using mail.btinternet.com as the SMTP server
with no problems. Others have reported this being blocked, but
mail.btclick.com (IIRC) working.

Then you just use the POP account provided by your host to download
email, or use redirection to the btinternet.com email address if you
don't want to be paying for POP3 either.
