RE: FN-FORUM: 3d drawing package

date posted 10th March 2003 11:54

You can achieve everything with the main program - the extra modules
(Mocca, Thinking Particles etc) are very high-end and relate more to the
animation side anyway. The only extra module I'd consider getting is the
advanced render, because it enables you to use radiosity, caustics,
depth of field and some other cool post-render effects. I use it for
creating things like a glint of light through the side of a glass. That
said the main package is incredibly good - the manual which comes with
it is first rate too - very readable and, amazingly enough, very funny.
If it helps, I only use it for still images and I used it to produce
images like these (www.deviantart.com/deviation/1131389
www.deviantart.com/deviation/1323190
www.deviantart.com/deviation/1272000
www.deviantart.com/deviation/871796) they were all rendered with alpha
in Cinema 4D and composited in Photoshop,

Hutch

Funny enough I was reading the advert for it on the back of Arts special
- there are lots of modules, what can you achieve with just R8?

If you're looking for a good 3D package that has the power you require
and yet won't totally baffle you during the initial learning curve, then
get Cinema 4D 8 (www.maxon.com). I have used all 3D packages - including
Maya, 3D Studio Max, Lightwave - and Cinema 4D is the one I settled on.
It's extremely powerful, really well coded (unlike 3D Studio), has a
great interface and one of the best rendering engines around,

I looked at Maya but you needed Win 2000 or xp to run it or MacX ('fraid
I am still on 98, me and mac 8 something - as it all works it doesn't
need fixing ;-)) I downloaded Adobe dimmensions try out - vs 3, then
realised I had it on the system from years ago - still version 3!!!! So
Adobe havn't changed it in I guess over 5 years!!

Others I was experimenting with are; Moray but it only exports to Povray
and raythingy, 3D Canvas - but it didn't like my Wacom tablet, OpenFX is
too confusing for me so I am now looking at AC3D. I liked the look of
stuff generated by Erain - but it is only for Flash - anyone here knows
this program?

Hi all, can anyone recommend a 3D imaging package that either is free or
pretty cheap. I'm looking to create geometric shapes to simulate
machines/buildings. It does not need to be able to produce animations.
