Aha!

If it's aol and your background is a gif (well done on getting it to
graduate then!) you could try the 1pixel animated trick to stop AOL
compressing it again.

What you do is make an animated gif from your original gif with one
extra frame which is just 1 pixel - AOL doesn't compress animated gif's
so no-one else on AOL (with the default setting) will see what your
client sees.
