I'm not entirely sure of the accuracy of this. I watched a program on road
safety recently where they were showing footage of this guy's experiments -

The program gave the impression that it isn't so much the "stopping" but the
fact that you don't actually stop, you flap around at x miles per hour in a
poorly designed seat belt, ripping your innards asunder and bits of the car
invade your personal space :)
