Seriously, on ThinkPads at least it is totally impossible. There is no
pass thru to allow for direct connection to the panel alone and you
can't detact the panel either.
If you want to run a second monitor on the ThinkPad then that is easy.
If you want to use the ThinkPad as a second monitor it is impossible.
