That's a damn good point.
I've still got my data files from when I was using CyberDog - I also have
the MacOS version that supports OpenDoc (essential to the use of CyberDog)
but I don't have a machine of that era to run them on. I also have my Claris
Emailer data but fortunately in this case, all the files are accessible via
any text editor.
In view of M$'s announcement regarding Mac Explorer, it makes me wonder
about the future of Entourage (my current email app). I could import it into
Apple Mail as Apple's responsible for the death of both CyberDog and Claris
Emailer ... Hmmm ... let's stand in an open field in a thunderstorm with a
metal pointy thing - maybe I WON'T get hit by lightening.
If this client of Ray's is serious about about wanting to access in 10 years
time, he'll need to somehow export everything as text. Outlook Express is
AppleScriptable, so it should be possible to build an app that would go
through the entire OE database, creating text files for each message and
corresponding folder structure. I wonder if someone's done it.
Once was able to successfully migrate an entire department's Mac QuickMail
(including the attachments) to Netscape Mail. I found a java application to
do it on Netscape's site. What he needs is something similar except the
destination is text.
On the other hand, kill a few trees and print'em! How long's paper been
around?
