I think BT have recently clamped down on access to their SMTP servers, due
to being black listed for allowing spam/relays etc.

I have a BT ADSL connection and have no problem sending through their SMTP
server even though I don't have an BT mail or hosting account.

I suspect you won't be able to access them unless your using BT as either
your provider or connection.

I have the inverse problem sending via our compuserve and UK2 net accounts
SMTP servers when connecting through BT ADSL, though they work fine if I
use the respective dial-up accounts via a modem.
