No you don't necessarily need to - it'll already be installed - on the old
hdd - you can leave them both in which is useful for backing up.
However, to be on the safe side its always best to install...

AFAIK there are two versions - a slightly older v1 and a newer v2. I've got
the v2 and haven't had one lock-up - regularly upload and download serious
