You should also check you have something like this in the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog] "Description"="Logs event messages issued by programs and Windows....

You could check msdn: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;162158 for instance doesn't describe your situation but mentions the system error 1717 you're getting. ---- Philip Painte...

Try running the iisreset command. It lurks in the system32 directory. I've found occasionally on some Win2K machines that that is the only way to iis running again but I'm not sure what triggers this...
