from what I remember (and to be honest I don't use VPN's) VPN's
inheritently use their own encryption too (on top of whatever connection
your using, wired, wireless etc etc)..

when I'm using my laptop I tend to pipe everything through ssh.. so ssh
connections, vnc, mail etc etc.. but I tend to use linux mainly so this
is quite easy.. am suspecting your using MS based solutions but ssh
(using something like PuTTY) can be made to use ssh too..
