You're right, they're not worth much more than that - they're worth=20
much less than that! However you should find Linux works just
fine on that spec, tho' more RAM would help enormously.
Burn a Knoppix CD first to check that all the relevant hardware
(Ethernet etc) works.
I've been playing with Fedora (the new "free" Red Hat) recently and
it seems pretty good. Interestingly, Knoppix seems to have got the
PCMCIA network card on an old laptop running where Fedora=20
failed.
Lycoris is meant to be Windows-user-friendly. I installed it=20
on someone's machine recently but haven't had much feedback
from them yet.
www.linuxiso.org is a neat collection of links to the relevant ISO=20
downloads for different distros.
