Get a knoppix cd and have a play to start with, no point moving if you not

After that I seriously recommend gentoo, the install instructions are very
clear (type this, type that) and you learn a lot about the setup of your
system on the way without really trying. The community is excellent (not a
RTFM nut in sight) and the portage package management is simply awesome.
I don't suggest you bother with Mandrake, I had been running it here for the
last few years and can sum up all my experiences in a single word "broken".
