No matter what distro you pick, you will and some point find yourself at the
command line fiddling with configuration files. Gentoo just starts you off
on the right track.

Bundled configuration utilities that only work under the narrowest of
circumstances or simply don't do what they are supposed to were the biggest
cause of my headaches, compounded by a release dates being set by the bean
counters and not on dependant on release suitability.
Classic example (I forget which major version), we were running a .1 release
and .2 RC was announced on the same day as the .2 release date, leaving
little over a week to get the RC out, tested, debugged and sent to the
presses. Needless to say, the final .2 was utter crud
The community has got to be one of the worst I have ever encountered, beset
by constant religious warfare, trolls and some of the most disturbing
fanatics that represent the very worst that Linux has to offer (many of
which don't even run Mandrake). Simple questions often being met with RTFM
and personal insults (usually from anonymous cowards)
And whatever you do, don't even think about compiling anything from source
unless you really know what your doing and are prepared to spend hours
fiddling.
The constant begging for money is also a drag.
The installer is nice tho.
