Gentoo/fluxbox is the only flavour I've tried that has actually worked for
me. I left the windows world completely for about 8 months. I tried SuSE
long before that but that nearly put me off Linux entirely - impossible to
get *anything* to work properly (for me, on my hardware).
On the contrary, the install docs on the Gentoo site are very complete and
thorough, even a relative Linux newbie like me managed to get things up and
running from scratch (it *will* take some time though) on my old Gateway
Solo 9300 laptop. The only help I needed was to get the driver for my
onboard gfx chip (ATI Mobile) working properly, luckily I have some clever
friends.
