I think it's quite appealing in a minimal early-classic-MacOS kinda way.

You want ugly, and it banes me to say it, as it's one of my very
favourite GUIs of all times ever, look at Acorn RISC OS. V1 was a demo;
V2 was lovely and elegant and simple. V3 the followed the herd and
bolted on this horrid ugly 3D "!NewLook" with textures. Horrid and very
amateurish looking. FreeGEM's Atari-esque smooth 3D look is much neater.
